“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” This is a well-known question in philosophical circles and classes. But it also has some meaning for Odd Fellows Lodges. Simply put: It’s important for Odd Fellows Lodges to be active and involved in the community – this activity and involvement helps grow Lodge membership and keeps existing members engaged. But it is equally important to communicate the activity to the membership. And that’s why DMC has often recommended that Lodges have internal newsletters. These newsletters should be sent to every Lodge member at least once a month, or in the case of very active Lodges once a week. The newsletters can share photos and information about events and meetings that have been held, and also events and meetings that are coming up. Often newsletters discuss member milestones like birthdays and anniversaries. These newsletters help to tie the membership together. Bringing in new members is critically important, but keeping exiting members active and engaged is equally important.

Many Lodges have hard-copy newsletters. Some Lodges have electronic newsletters. If your Lodge has no newsletter, it’s time to explore that with your membership and find one or two members who have talent in writing and editing.

The Davis Odd Fellows Lodge has a very extensive electronic newsletter that is sent to every member and every applicant for membership every Saturday morning. I am not suggesting that your Lodge should have such a detailed newsletter, but following is a recent copy of our newsletter for your information. It may give you some food for thought if you decide to develop your own Lodge’s newsletter.
