HurricaneAndPartner A unique event will take place in Davis later this month.  The public is invited to attend the “Dogtoberfest”, a fundraising extravaganza, on Sunday, October 20, starting at 4 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall, 415 Second Street in Downtown Davis.

“The Davis Odd Fellows ask community members to attend, and businesses to support and sponsor this event to raise money to help the Davis Police Department to acquire a new dog for the K-9 unit,” said long-time Odd Fellow Ann Carroll, a coordinator of the event.

The Dogtoberfest will be a traditional Oktoberfest with all the food, live music, and decor one would expect at such events.  General admission tickets are available at $20 each and VIP tickets can be purchased for $40 each.  Tickets are available at the Avid Reader located at 617 2nd Street and Common Grounds located at 2171 Cowell Blvd., Suite D.  One hundred percent of the proceeds will be diverted to the Davis Police Department to acquire a new K-9.

HurricaneEntertains“Police dogs suitable for K-9 units are special dogs that receive rigorous training,” added Dody Black, also a long-time member of the Odd Fellows and a coordinator of the Dogtoberfest.  “Needless to say, these dogs are expensive, but they provide an invaluable part of police protection for our community.”

The special dogs that are typically trained for police work include German Shepherd Dogs, and Belgian Malinois or Belgian Shepherd Dogs.  They are trained at unique facilities in Eastern Europe and can cost upwards of $20,000.  Once in the United States, the dogs are paired with a human partner, and undergo further training.   Davis’ current K-9 officer – named Hurricane (aka “Cane”) – is “retiring” in the near future.

“The Dogtoberfest is a going to be great fun for those who attend,” said Carroll, “but it’s also a way for us, as citizens of this town, to do our part to help our police department protect our community.”
